Omar A. Chowdhury is an immigrant from historical Bengal—a vanished, decolonised place. Disoriented by this geographic and temporal rupture he makes meta-fictional environments that house tightly-coupled fields of objects, actions and representations which include texts, performances, films, photographs, sculptures, sounds, archives, electronics and code. His layered and elusive installations are attempts to travel through time and into the lives of others—into what he feels was taken from him. Appropriating the processes and tools of phenomenological hermeneutics and modernist narratology his practice effaces the partitions between what is real and what is not. It makes us deeply uncertain about our relation to the past, about who to trust, and where one expects art to stop.
Recent solo presentations at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Sydney), Bengal Gallery (Dhaka), MOMENTUM (Berlin), India Art Fair (Delhi), Dhaka Art Summit, and screenings at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), La Gaîté lyrique (Paris), Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane) for Asia Pacific Triennial 8. I'm the recent recipient of an Ian Potter Cultural Trust Grant, Bengal Foundation Practice Grant, Keir Foundation/4A Commission, Australia Council Skills and Development Grant, and an Australian Cinematographer’s Society Gold Award. My work has been reviewed by The Guardian, Artinfo, Art Australia and other journals and magazines.
He will attend the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam in 2018/19 and is currently a post-academic laureate at the Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten, Gent. He graduated from the University of New South Wales, Sydney.
